Device speeds

When you run a web-based speed test, you see the download and upload speed on that one device. Your device speed may be slower than your plan speed, which can cause concern, but it's normal. Learn more about the expected WiFi speed for your device.

Device lookup

Look up your device below to see what the estimated WiFi speed would be based on its age and specifications.

The speed on a device cannot exceed your total plan speed.

Device speeds can be expected to be up to the speeds shown in the table. Speeds vary based on several factors. See the FAQs below for more.

Device speed FAQs

Learn more about device speeds and what else impacts your WiFi speed and performance.

To reach its optimal speed, your device must use technology equal to or greater than your WiFi equipment. For instance, a brand new smartphone with WiFi 7 technology that is connected to WiFi 5 equipment won't reach the top speeds for that device.

Please note that equipment is determined by region; specific WiFi pods cannot be requested.

Keep all personal devices updated with the latest firmware or software to help enable the most current WiFi speed capabilities. For computers and mobile devices, also ensure you run security scans regularly to prevent devices from becoming slowed down by malware.

Many factors in your environment can impact your WiFi speeds, including:

  • Distance between your device and the router or WiFi pod
  • Physical barriers, especially thick walls, large mirrors or fish tanks, or heavy appliances such as fridges
  • Electronic interference or "noise" from multiple devices or neighboring networks
  • Pod "oversaturation," or too many WiFi pods causing interference

"Wireless" actually refers to radio waves. They can travel at different wavelengths (or frequencies), which are measured in gigahertz (GHz). Different WiFi devices may have one or more frequency options, also called bands—2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz. The difference comes down to the speed and range of the signal. 2.4 GHz signal travels farther at lower speeds, while the 5 GHz and 6 GHz frequencies allow faster speeds at shorter range.
