How to set up internet and connect your utilities
Moving to a new home or apartment can be overwhelming. From packing boxes to renting a truck and hiring movers, you'll be doing some heavy lifting. And when you arrive at your new home, you'll want your utilities connected so they're ready to go.
Knowing how to transfer internet service when moving—plus setting up electricity, water, gas, and trash collection services—are your first priorities. Whether you’re already a Denverite or are relocating to the Mile High City, our checklist will help make your moving day as smooth as possible.
With Quantum Fiber in Denver, ordering fast fiber internet for your new home is just one click away. Start by checking if fiber internet is available at your new address. Once confirmed, schedule a time for free installation, and we’ll take care of it from there.
If you’re already a Quantum Fiber customer, you'll need to contact customer service to cancel your existing service and create an account for your new home. Quantum Fiber offers no annual contracts, meaning you can cancel it anytime with no termination fees. With a no-annual-contract service, you'll have the most flexibility for managing your account and getting the internet service you want. Just call us at 833-250-6306 and we’ll cancel your old account, help you set up the new one, and tell you what to do with any existing Quantum Fiber equipment.
We recommend ordering internet before moving in and scheduling installation about two weeks before you move. When the big day arrives, be sure an adult aged 18 or over is home to meet our technician. You could be up and running with Multi-Gig speed internet and a 360 WiFi™ network that blankets your home in coverage within a few hours. Be sure you’ve confirmed that your power will be on before your internet service is installed.
Xcel Energy provides electric and natural gas to most of the Denver area. You can submit a request to move or establish new service up to 60 days before relocation, even though the company only requires a few days' notice to power up your new place. There is no fee to disconnect existing service, but Xcel may require a deposit or a fee to transfer or establish a new account.
The Xcel website provides a variety of resources to help with your move. Outlying areas beyond Xcel’s footprint are served by Core Electric Cooperative and Black Hills Energy.
Denver Water provides water service for the greater Denver area. If you’ve purchased a new home, Denver Water allows your title company to submit a request for service at your new address to coincide with your real estate closing. They charge a $35 fee to turn on new service. Certain suburbs and outlying areas have their own water districts.

Trash and sanitation services are provided by the City of Denver. The city charges a monthly fee between $9 and $21, depending on the amount of trash you have and the corresponding size of the curbside collection cart you select. The city has a successful recycling program that collects more than 26,000 tons of recyclable materials annually and is currently rolling out a citywide composting program. Recycling and compost bins are provided by the city for no additional fee.
Trash, recycling, and composting collection happens weekly. You can set up your account, check the pickup schedule, and set reminders on the Denver city website so you don’t forget trash day.
